What's Your Role?
Roles determine contributions; the job to be done; the position we play on a team; what we are responsible for delivering. Preferred roles are what we do best, enjoy doing, and gain energy from doing; our default behavior on a team or in a meeting.
Knowing your preferences for these four roles drives smarter execution.
START THE ACTION (Move). The role of starting is about expansive and forward thinking, visioning, creating, initiating, exploring what you think is possible, introducing new ideas, setting direction and getting things moving. Without starting, there is no direction. Deep conviction resides here.
FINISH THE ACTION (Follow). The role of finishing is about completing the task, closing the deal, getting behind ideas, stepping in and getting things done. Without finishing, there is no completion or closure. Deep collaboration resides here.
CORRECT THE ACTION (Oppose). The role of correcting is about improving, protecting, sustaining, stewarding, and enhancing the integrity of what already exists. Without correction there is no improvement. Deep coherence resides here.
CONNECT THE ACTION (Bystand). The role of connecting the dots is about observing and integrating disparate ideas, stepping back, seeing inconsistencies, suspending assumptions long enough to probe, develop perspective, translate, and bridge. Without observation, there is no perspective. Deep awareness resides here.
